Panorama Photo's

All of these were taken around the Ullswater/Pooley area.

I have decided to add more text to this page rather than just links to the Panoramas. But if you
just want to browse the Pics click on the Red Links. My visit to the Cumbria/Keswick was
October 2009 just 1 month before those terrible floods washed away bridges and took the
life of a Police officer. My 4 day visit then was graced with 1 sunny day 2 cloudy
white days and 1 which was going to be rain but i thought nuts to that and came home.

This Visit to Ullswater Lake (May 2010) had 1 sunny day and also 3 days of white sky :-(
but i stuck it out, mainly because my cheap train tickets would not allow for a hasty retreat.
The Local people at the Hillcroft Holiday camp and Pooley are so friendly it makes London
and its unwanted "Diversity" seem primative in comparision.
There are 2 ways to walk up Arthurs Pike the nearest Fell, there is the easy way and also
there is the hard way! guess which one i chose? yep the hard way which is not a good idea.

If you are going to stay at Hillcroft via a Holiday or Camping, then turn left immediatly
outside the camp entrance and follow the road untill you hit 2 wooden gates, go through
the gates and follow the path, this is the easy way and also the route i took to return to camp.
I turned right outside the camp then first left and followed that until i found a public footpath
which lead towards Arthurs Pike. This meant i walked up the side of the Fell (puff pant)
untill i met the footpath. But it did mean i could produce some Panoramas on the way up
which was also a good excuse to catch my breath ( i suffer with an undetermined lung problem)
This one was taken almost at ground level and is not that good as the lake (Ullswater) is not
in sight properly. This Panorama shows a lot of Yellow bush (1.93mb) as i am no Botonist
we shall leave it at that. At the point of the next photo i had stopped for a coffee break and
a rest, but on the way up i noticed some Sheep were up and down the side of the fell with
no problem, and a thought occured to me. Sheep, everywhere in this area i went there was sheep
but not in any field did i see horses or cows just miles and miles of sheep, no wonder i kept feeling tired.
The ealier mentioned next photo is 2.89mb in size and is 6 photos wide at 5.1 mega pixels, i bet
some smart ars has worked it out already but it is 11230 x 1820 in size. This shows the lake but also
that i am still climbing as you can see the hill to the right. At the right end of the lake you can see a
sprinkle of buildings, this is the Village called Pooley which has 4 shops, 3 Pubs and 1 church.
The Grocery shop was poorly stocked and offered nothing to take away and cook, the Sweet/
Cafe served only Fry-up meals which were not that good and on both occasions i left more than i ate.
Back to the climb which should have been a walk, and this Panorama is taken just a small way down from
the peak of Arthurs pike
and is 1.84mb. There was one taken from slightly higher up but a very large
cloud splatted out the sun and it looks dark in places, OK here it is but do not complain if you
do not like it cos i do not. It is 8 yes 8 Photo's wide at 2.29 mb and 12683 x 1870 in size.
Walking up the fell from the side was not really dangerous as such but it was not easy for me,
every now and then i would meet a stream which came from within the fell which made the ground
feel boggy which involved a lot of jumping. But reaching the peak was great as there was no wind
on my chosen day and there was no sound except the whisling in my ears which is my constant
companion. I heard no Birds or sheep up there just the occasional Police siren some miles away.
I have noticed that almost every one you meet on the fells is of a friendly nature and only to happy
to have a quick chat which i think is great, say "hello" to a stranger in London you might not live
long enough to say goodbye.

While having my quite moment i spotted a Steamer on the lake (not a Panorama) so the following day
i parted with £12.50 and got a trip to the other end of the lake called Glenridding. This place was
a none event so i took a walk to the next town along called Patterdale, this was also a small Village
it had 1 shop,1 Church and 3 pubs + Sheep. This Village was much more picturesque than Pooley
and was less busy, and again the food was crud. However i did enjoy my time there taking photo's
around the stream and of the fells and felt my £12.50 was not wasted. On the Patterdale Police notice
was mention of a fellow that had fallen of the Steamer on April 29th 2010 and has never been found.

I do not drive which means i take trains and buses to get about, apart from 2 plonkers that put me on
the wrong train at Lancaster, i got to Penrith without to much pain. But from Penrith to Pooley is only
advisable by Mini-Cab as the Bus service is almost Zero,  The busses only run approx every 2 hours during
the day and finish late afternoon. Fortunatly i had a very understanding Mini-cab driver from Ace Taxi's who
had made 3 attempts to pick me up from Penrith Station. I was 2 hours late thanks to Bill and Ben at
Lancaster Station. Ace Taxi Number is 01768890731 which appears on the internet anyway which is where
i found it. The fare is £13.97 from Penrith to Hillcroft camp but this may vary from one company to the next.

One last gripe before i finish, i enjoy going for walks, not so much in London but anywhere else i do.
I see other people out walking and they are carrying 1 or 2 shoulder high springy things and using them
like they are ski-ing! WTF are they doing?  Craaaaazy.
